I’ve tried everything. Wildlife control operators (WCOs) have heard clients make this claim for years. WCOs know that clients who make this claim are not being fully accurate. The fact is, clients have not tried everything. The statement, ”I’ve tried everything.” is simply a comment expressing frustration by the client. It shouldn’t be taken literally.
Unfortunately, many times such as a claim shouldn’t be taken seriously either. Too many clients think that “everything” means mothballs, loud radios, urines from predators, such as fox or coyote (sometimes even their own), or flashing lights. It’s sad that the public continues to believe in these techniques. I have written elsewhere why these techniques continue to be tried and for the vast majority, fail. How should you respond?
When a client tells you, “I’ve tried everything.” what should you say? Let me tell you how I responded when I was in business. One response I would give would be to simply ignore the claim. Your goal is to convince your client that you can get the job done. Arguing with the client about the veracity of the statement simply wastes time and doesn’t make you any money. I would certainly recommend this answer as the best option.
But sometimes I would answer by directly refuting the client’s claim by saying, “No, you haven’t tried everything because you haven’t tried me.” I can be a bit snarky. I can’t remember why I would answer this way. I have little doubt that sometimes my response was due to being tired of these kinds of silly remarks. But I believe that some of them were to simply shock the client out of the mythology of their opinion. I am not recommending that you follow my behavior. I wasn’t the best salesman. But I do think that the comment sometimes closed the deal quickly because the client was jolted into reality.
Bottom Line: Find a way to get your client’s thinking back on track and focused on how you and your company can resolve their vertebrate pest problem.Stephen M.
